Car Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio 2026: Compare All Insurers

September 2026 · 8 min read · By Vikash Aggarwal

Most people shop for car insurance on premium alone. That's backwards. A policy is only worth what it pays out when you actually need it — and claim settlement data is the closest thing to a report card on how an insurer behaves when your car is damaged, stolen, or written off. After 22 years placing motor policies for Indian families, I can tell you the ₹500–1,000/year you save by picking the cheapest quote is meaningless if the insurer fights you on a ₹2 lakh claim.

This guide compares claim settlement data across India's major car insurers, explains what the numbers actually mean, and tells you where to verify them yourself.

Claim Settlement Ratio vs Incurred Claim Ratio: Know the Difference

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they measure different things — and mixing them up leads to bad comparisons:

When you see a car insurer's "claim settlement ratio" quoted at 99% or 102%, check which metric is actually being reported — the two aren't directly comparable across insurers unless you know which one you're looking at.

FY2024-25 claim settlement ratio figures, sourced from IRDAI's Annual Report. Industry-wide average CSR for motor: 94.03%. Two insurers we don't have FY2024-25 figures for are marked as such rather than left with stale numbers. SBI General Car Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio

SBI General reports a claim settlement ratio of 97.51% for FY2024-25, per IRDAI — above the industry average of 94.03%. Combined with the largest cashless garage network in this comparison (20,000+), it's a strong pick for policyholders outside major metros where garage density matters most. Royal Sundaram Car Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio

Royal Sundaram reports a claim settlement ratio of 95.82% for FY2024-25, per IRDAI — above the industry average of 94.03%, though below the leading private insurers in this comparison. Still a licensed, regulated insurer with a dedicated network of 3,300+ garages. Full details in our Royal Sundaram car insurance review.

How to Verify Claim Settlement Data Yourself

Don't take any single source's word for it — including ours. Here's where the data actually comes from:

💡 A high claim ratio tells you an insurer pays out — it doesn't guarantee your specific claim will be smooth. Garage network density near you, the add-ons you've bought (zero depreciation, engine protect), and how promptly you report an incident all matter just as much.

Beyond the Ratio: What Else Should Influence Your Choice

1. Garage Network Near You

A 99% claim ratio means little if the nearest cashless garage is 40 km away. SBI General (20,000+), Reliance General (8,500+) and Tata AIG (7,500+) lead on network size.

2. Claims Turnaround Time

Digit's digital-first process settles some claims in as little as 7 minutes for straightforward cases — turnaround time matters as much as the eventual payout for day-to-day convenience.

3. Add-On Coverage

Zero depreciation, engine protect and return-to-invoice cover often determine your actual payout amount far more than a percentage-point difference in claim ratio between two well-rated insurers.

⚠️ Watch for stale data: claim and incurred claim ratios are reported annually and can shift meaningfully year to year, especially for smaller insurers. Always check the reporting period before comparing two insurers' numbers.

My Recommendation

If claims experience is your top priority, HDFC ERGO and Digit currently lead this comparison. If you live outside a major metro and garage access matters most, SBI General's combination of a very strong incurred claim ratio and the widest network makes it hard to beat. Whichever insurer you choose, always add zero depreciation cover if your car is under 5 years old — it affects your actual payout far more than a few percentage points of claim ratio.
